Gifted Testing for New Students

2024-2025 GIFTED TESTING
FOR STUDENTS NEW TO MASON CITY SCHOOLS ONLY

This testing is only for students who are new to the district and have already registered to attend school beginning in the 2024-2025 school year.  The results of the test will be used for placement in the appropriate gifted service setting.

Students may have already qualified for gifted services if test results from the previous school meet the district’s criteria for service.  Oftentimes, prior schools can take a month or more to provide test records, so parents are encouraged to either provide records of tests or contact the previous school and request that records be sent as a pdf attachment to an email or as a fax to the address or number noted above.

ONLY for students who are new to the district:
If your child has a qualifying cognitive test score Mason will accept the score and provide the service so long as the specific test is on the Ohio Department of Education list of approved tests.  A cognitive test is a test of a student’s reasoning abilities and it should be requested only if a student is presumed to be exceptionally advanced for his or her age.  In order to qualify for gifted services a student must earn a score that is two standard deviations above the mean minus the standard error of measurement. (Examples of tests: CogAT, WISC, NNAT2, etc.)  If your child has received a test score from one of these tests in the past 24 months please submit those official results to giftedtesting@masonohioschools.com

If your child does not have an existing qualifying score, Mason offers the opportunity for a new student to be tested for possible services to begin in the 2024-2025 school year.  To determine if a child qualifies for services we administer a cognitive assessment for students in grades 1 through 6.  Please keep in mind that if your child does qualify for gifted services, he or she may require a change in classroom placement to receive services for the 2024-2025 school year.  Parents do have the right to decline gifted services for this current school year by completing the withdrawal /refusal of services form.

To register  for a test session please complete the Mason City Schools Gifted Identification Testing Form.  If your child is on an I.E.P. or has a 504 Plan that requires testing accommodations or modifications, please specify this at the time you register your child for testing. We will need a copy of the I.E.P. or 504 in advance, to allow for time to prepare for accommodations.

CogAT testing for registered new to Mason students will take place either during the summer or during the first few weeks of school. Someone from your child’s building will periodically review registrations and will contact you to make arrangements for testing.
