Gifted Testing

All Mason students are eligible for two cognitive assessments each year.  Students with an existing gifted identification in cognitive ability and who are currently receiving collaboration gifted services are eligible to request testing up to two times this year for the purpose of a potential change in services for the 2026-2027 school year.  

Registration Deadlines 
In order to have appropriate staffing and test materials, we must adhere to the registration deadline.  We will not be able to accept late registrations for any reason. 

  • Winter Testing Registration Deadline
    • Grade 1: Friday, January 16
  • Spring Testing Registration Deadlines
    • Grades K, 3, 4, 5, and 6: Friday, March 20, 2026
    • Grades 1 and 2: Friday, April 10, 2026

As we work diligently to design a gifted test schedule that will best accommodate staff and students, we ask you to register your student only if necessary by accessing the grade level specific information below. 

KINDERGARTEN
All testing will be conducted during the regular school day. Students will be pulled from their general education classroom, and will not follow their typical schedule during testing time.  The testing schedule will allow for minimal time out of the classroom.

  • Spring: March 31, April 1, and 2

You will not receive an immediate confirmation of your registration, instead confirmation and testing details and reminders will be emailed to you from your child's school prior to the test.

Students are required to attend all days of testing - in the event of a child’s illness, please contact the building attendance office.

To register for the spring cognitive test session please complete the Mason City Schools Gifted Identification Testing Form.

GRADE 1
All testing will be conducted during the regular school day. Students will be pulled from their general education classroom, and will not follow their typical schedule during testing time.  The testing schedule will allow for minimal time out of the classroom.

  • Winter: January 27, 28, and 29
  • Spring: April 20, 21, and 22

Any registrations after Friday, January 16 will be scheduled for spring test dates.  To register for the cognitive test session please complete the Mason City Schools Gifted Identification Testing Form.  

GRADE 2

All testing will be conducted during the regular school day. Students will be pulled from their general education classroom, and will not follow their typical schedule during testing time.  The testing schedule will allow for minimal time out of the classroom.

  • Spring: April 20, 21, and 22

Students are required to attend all days of testing - in the event of a child’s illness, please contact the building attendance office.

GRADE 3, 4, 5, and 6

All testing will be conducted during the regular school day. Students will be pulled from their general education classroom, and will not follow their typical schedule during testing time. The testing schedule will allow for minimal time out of the classroom.

*Sixth grade students are eligible to register for the cognitive assessment for the purpose of a potential gifted identification. However, services for identified students do not go into effect until the following school year. In grades 7-12 students do not need a gifted identification in order to self-select into academic enrichment, Honors, and AP courses.
