It is a great privilege to serve as the superintendent of the Mason City School district.  We are fortunate to attract students and talent from around the world. We provide a rich academic experience combined with vast student opportunities that come with our curricular programming. Whether you are looking to compete on one of our state champion athletic teams, participate in our nationally ranked marching band, or compete at globals in science olympiad - we truly strive to provide opportunities that meet all of our students’ needs and interests in and out of the classroom.

When I became superintendent, the Cooper family relocated to Mason because we truly saw this as an opportunity for our whole family to serve our whole community. My wife, Michelle, and I talk to our four kids often about the joy of learning, but also the responsibility and privilege to serve our community together as a family. One of the things that drew us to Mason, not only professionally but also personally, is the quality of the Mason community. Our schools have innovative and engaged business partners as well as a unique and remarkable relationship with our City and Township that allows us to leverage local resources to address safety and wellness needs and exciting innovative practices for our students, staff, and families.

As a leader, I believe in building meaningful relationships through listening, collaborating, and connecting with our students, staff, and community. I have adopted a community-sourced leadership style that allows me to connect with our various valued customers in an effort to align our district direction with our community's values.

This has led us to focus on three key areas which we refer to as our three big rocks

  • An intentional focus on our culture, which is the way that the people of our organization and community live and learn together;
  • A deep commitment to inclusive excellence which is the celebration of diversity, realization of justice and equity, and the living out of authentic inclusion;
  • The piece that brings it all together in the classroom is personalized learning… where the learning environment is truly leveraging the talent, creativity, interests, and needs of the people. An approach that is progressively learner driven to allow all learners to discover personal purpose through the joy of learning.

Whether you are currently part of the Comet family or you are visiting our website and investigating this destination district, please know that you are welcome and we are here to serve you!

If you see us out riding our bikes around the community, please say hello!

Go Comets!
