Welcome to Mason High School

We educate the district's 9-12 grade students. We pride ourselves on providing a learning ecosystem that strives to deliver excellence every day for ALL of our students by ensuring high impact learning, engaging our families and community, and providing a safe and nurturing environment. The foundation of our learning ecosystem is built through the relationships we build with our students, families, staff members, and community members through open dialogue and communication. Student Parking Information

Students who drive to school are expected to purchase a parking permit. Parking passes are sold throughout the year requiring a valid driver’s license at the time of purchase. Applications are available online. School fees must be paid prior to purchasing a permit. The parking rate for the school year will be as follows:

Student Parking

Students must display a parking permit and the student code of conduct applies to the parking lot areas.

Students found parking without a permit, in an unassigned area/spot, or failing to display their permit are subject to disciplinary action. (Note: This includes the staff area of Mason Middle School and Mason Intermediate School).

Improper Vehicle Operation: Students operating their vehicles in an unsafe manner will have their parking privileges suspended or revoked and be subject to the appropriate traffic citation.

Note: There are no refunds for parking once the pass has been purchased (this includes early graduates.) Parking passes are non-transferable; registration is student specific and passes may not be given or sold to another student.

Clubs & Activities

Because we believe in educating the whole child at Mason High School, we provide a wide range of learning opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. Students who participate in extracurricular activities tend to do better academically. Clubs also give students the opportunity to work with peers and build lifelong friendships, develop problem-solving and leadership skills, strengthen self-esteem, and learn new things in a fun environment. Joining a club also gives students a chance to explore their interests and talents. Please learn more about the many fantastic clubs we offer, and think about joining a few! The History of William Mason High School’s Crest

MHS Crest

In spring 2007, our school’s official crest was unveiled by graduating senior, Lisa Morozova, during a speech given by her at the Class of 2007 Commencement Ceremony. Morozova, along with committee members David Allen, Kevin Bright, Tracey Carson, Marianne Culbertson, Sherri Federle, Tim Keeton, Kathryn McCann, Aaron Roberts, Jerry Schrock and Danielle Waggoner collaborated to present MHS students and staff with options for their approval though secret ballot. The crest you see displayed today is the one selected by the committee and students. It has been a part of every commencement ceremony since 2007. Also, the crest is used to officially welcome each incoming freshmen class.

Symbolism and Meaning in the Crest

At the center of the crest is a torch to symbolize our commitment to knowledge. A globe reflects our connectivity with the world outside of our school’s walls and a pen helps visualize our staff and students’ commitment to scholarly pursuits. All of these symbols were placed onto an open book to stress our continuous acquisition of knowledge. Two sheaths of wheat were added to honor our community’s agricultural roots. Our name, William Mason High School, is shown proudly on the banner. William Mason was the American Revolutionary War veteran who, in 1803, purchased the 640 acres that is now Mason and gives his name to our school. The date 1805 is shown because that is the date William Mason built our first school, a log cabin built within the original acreage so that his children could get an education. Below the date, seven stars are shown. These stars represent the seven members of the very first graduating class of MHS. The original commencement ceremony, held at Mason’s Opera House (where 5/3 bank is located in downtown Mason today) in 1886, featured all seven graduates delivering a commencement address. At the top of the crest are the pillars: Honor, Knowledge, Service, and Achievement. The pillars represent the goals and aspirations of staff and students. At the base, a block M, the official logo of Mason High School supports the crest. Included in the background of the crest are kelly green and white stripes, the official colors of our school.

Grading Practices and GPA Calculation

It is in the interest of students and the educational process to have a grading system that is interpreted uniformly and applied consistently throughout the building. Grades will then be assigned for each grading period to the following scale:

90 - 100 = A
80 - 89 = B
70 - 79 = C
60 - 69 = D
0 - 59 = F

The teacher has “professional evaluatory prerogative” in arriving at individual grades recorded in the grade book for the semester. This includes the construction of classroom materials for evaluation, the grading of such materials, and the weight of each grade. Teachers may record in their grade books either percentage, letter grades, or letter grade-point values.

A minimum of seven (7) grades must be recorded in the grade book to back up any mark given as a semester grade, (including tests, class participation, homework, reports, projects, etc.). A minimum of three (3) grades must be recorded before the first interim period.

A student or parent may ask for an administrative review of a grade that appears to be inconsistent with the established policy. Some exceptions to the grading system described may be made in the areas of Intervention Specialist instruction as noted in the Individual Educational Plan. Notation of curricular modifications and/or accommodations will be made for each graded course.

Semester averages will be used to determine the grade-point average, (in accordance with guidelines published by the O.A.S.S.A. - Ohio Association of Secondary School Administrators).

Grade Point Average Calculation

All grades earned at Mason High School and high school credits earned at Mason Middle School will count in the calculation of the student’s grade point average (as of 2014-15.) Grade point averages will be calculated and rounded to two decimal places. Advanced Placement/Honors courses in which a grade of “C” or higher is earned will receive the appropriate weighted credit for each designated course. College Credit Plus courses successfully completed may, with a grade of “C” or higher, be calculated into the student’s grade point average with the appropriate weighted credit for each course (see College Credit Plus.)

Grade-Point Average (GPA) Calculation for Class of 2023 and beyond

All grades earned at Mason High School and high school credits earned at Mason Middle School will count in the calculation of the student’s grade point average.

When calculating GPA for the Class of 2023 and beyond, Mason High School will award quality points for all courses as follows for .5 credit semester courses:

Weighted Credit Guidelines for Students Transferring to MHS

Students who transfer to Mason High School from another district will be eligible to receive weighted credit in all courses that are comparable to the honors or Advanced Placement courses that Mason High School offers. Transfer students will receive weighted credit for only those courses. Honors courses not offered at Mason High School that are on a student’s transcript will not receive weighted credit but will be designated with their original title.

Each year, Mason City Schools offers career-technical education programs at Great Oaks Career Campuses. These programs are designed to prepare youth for a broad range of employment and training services are offered under the guidance of certified teachers, counselors, and cooperative education coordinators. Prevention & Wellness

At Mason City Schools, we believe in educating the whole child by helping students believe in who they are and who they can become by providing supports to foster their educational and social-emotional learning. We believe in building meaningful relationships with every student and helping them take care of themselves mentally, physically, and emotionally. Mason City School’s Prevention and Wellness Department, works in collaboration with the Student Services Department, and is a multidisciplinary team ready to support the needs of all students. The team works to promote student, staff and community wellness through resource and program development, as well as, continuing to build community wellness partnerships.

In addition to our internal team, our partnerships with Mindpeace, 1N5, Grant Us Hope, Joshua’s Place and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital support these goals by providing access to therapeutic supports and services for students and families. Additionally, as of the 2021-2022 school year, we will have a therapy dog placed on each campus. The therapy dogs will be handled by the Prevention and Wellness Team to support a variety of student needs throughout the school day.

Prevention and Wellness Designers

Prevention and Wellness Designers evaluate building level needs, create and align programming with district rocks, analyze program effectiveness, build capacity of staff, and train staff in a variety of mental health topics. They work in collaboration with building counselors, school psychologists, administrators, intervention specialists, and contracted clinicians to build a tiered system of intervention to increase access to care. In addition, they assist building teams in developing plans for transitioning students back from clinical care to help ensure a successful reintegration within the school environment.

School Counselors

Mason City Schools has 21 School Counselors throughout our district who are available to work with students and families on an ongoing basis. Each school provides counseling services to help students with social-emotional skill development, problem-solving, healthy decision-making, crisis intervention, conflict resolution and substance abuse prevention. School counselors help keep students emotionally healthy and ready to learn. Counselors also regularly engage in college and career planning with students and their families.

School Psychologists

The district has 10 school psychologists who play an integral role in our schools - promoting mental wellness and preventing maladaptive behaviors for students. They partner with families, teachers, school administrators and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments that strengthen connections between home, school and the community.

The school psychologist consults with parents, teachers, administrators, counselors, students, and community agencies to collaboratively develop interventions for supporting the individual needs of children with academic and/or behavioral concerns. The school psychologist is also available for educational, social, emotional, and behavioral assessment.

Technology

Schoology - Daily Grades & Homework

Schoology is the online platform where Mason City Schools teachers, students, and families collaborate. It allows users to create, manage, and share content. Schoology is known as a Learning Management System (LMS) that uses a cloud based storage system for managing an online classroom.

Teachers use the site to take attendance, use an online grade book, post discussion questions, homework, files, links, and other information. Students are able to access all class information, take quizzes and tests, upload files through an online dropbox, participate in class discussions, stay organized with a school calendar, download and print files from home, and much more. Families are able to observe their child’s assignments and calendars while staying involved in their education.

Schoology has the look and the feel of Facebook with many different functions that are necessary for the classroom. The site allows for teachers to facilitate collaboration among a class or group of students.

Chromebooks

Every student receives a Chromebook so they can take advantage of the vast resources available to them. We recommend that students purchase a case to reduce the likelihood of damage.

Home Access Center is used for student requests, report cards, transcripts, and scheduling for grades 7-12. Information formerly found within Mason Connects, such as primary contacts and schedules is now in MasonConnects. Transcripts and report cards are found in MasonConnects and Home Access Center.

Web Filter

Each Chromebook provided by the district as well as the Google Suite go through an internet filter. Therefore, even when students are at home, the Chromebook is being filtered. We know there's no way to filter out all unsavory content but the district is committed to this effort. Check with your Internet Service Provider for additional equipment (router) based filtering options.

Hope Squad

What is Hope Squad?

Hope Squad is a mental health awareness and peer to peer suicide prevention program at Mason High School and Mason Middle School. Squad members have been anonymously nominated by their peers. Hope Squad's mission is to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health and to promote this message to the community as well as within the schools.
