Gifted Information for Students New to Mason
We're excited to welcome your family to Mason! If your child has previously been identified as gifted or participated in gifted programming, we're here to help make the transition as smooth as possible. Depending on your child's previous testing and records, additional testing may or may not be needed.
Transitioning Your Child's Gifted Records
Step 1
Send Gifted Records
If your child has completed prior gifted testing, submit official records as soon as possible. Have your previous school send records directly to:

Submitting records early reduces the need for unnecessary testing.
Step 2
Score Review
Mason accepts qualifying test scores from approved assessments recognized by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (e.g., CogAT, WISC, NNAT).
If existing scores qualify under Ohio criteria, retesting is not needed.
Step 3
Additional Testing
If qualifying test scores are not on file, cognitive testing may be recommended after enrollment for Grades 1–6 to determine service eligibility.
Placements may adjust if a student qualifies after enrollment.

Registering for New Student Testing
If testing is recommended after score review, please complete the official Mason City Schools Gifted Identification Testing Form.
Accommodations Notice (IEP / Section 504): If your child requires testing accommodations, please indicate this during registration and provide a copy of the plan in advance.
Testing Timeline

Enrolled Before End of September
Scheduled for testing during the summer or within the first few weeks of school.

Participate during the district's scheduled winter or spring testing windows.

Frequently Asked Questions
My child was identified as gifted in another state. Will Mason honor that identification?
Mason reviews official testing records to determine whether previous assessments meet Ohio's gifted identification criteria. If additional information is needed, we will work directly with your family to determine next steps.
Does my child need to be tested again?
Not necessarily. If your child has qualifying scores from an approved assessment, additional testing is often unnecessary. We strongly encourage families to submit existing records before requesting new testing.
If my child qualifies, how are gifted services provided?
Gifted services vary by grade level across Preschool–Kindergarten, Elementary, Middle School, and High School. You can learn more details on our Gifted Services by Grade Level page.
If my child qualifies, will they change classrooms?
Possibly. Depending on your child's grade level and area of identification, a classroom placement change may be necessary to ensure appropriate service access. Families always retain the option to decline services via the Withdrawal or Refusal of Gifted Services form.
If my child does not qualify, can they test again?
Yes. Students are eligible for up to two gifted testing opportunities each school year. Participation in New to Mason testing counts as one of those opportunities. (For 2nd and 4th graders, whole-grade testing serves as the 2nd opportunity).
