MMS Welcomes New Interim Assistant PrincipalJavaris Powell is the new interim assistant principal at Mason Middle School. He will begin February 1, 2019, and replaces Assistant Principal Becky Cornett who resigned in December to pursue other career interests. Powell comes to the Mason City School District with a rich mixture of educational experiences that include success as a classroom teacher, administrator, and educational partnership manager.

“I am excited to work with the team to continue forging a path for academic excellence for the entire Mason learning community, and to support the efforts that have made the district a pillar of PreK-12 education in the state of Ohio," said Powell.

Powell comes to Mason from Washington D.C. where he is currently serving as a liaison for Discovery Education and school districts across the United States. Prior to working for Discovery Education, he was an assistant principal in the District of Columbia Public Schools, the manager of the Science Technology Engineering and Math Programs at Friendship Public Charter School in Washington D.C., and a middle school math teacher. In 2012, Powell was one of three teachers nationwide honored at the first DiscoverE Educators Summit by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the National Engineers Week Foundation for his efforts to introduce middle school students to engineering and science concepts.

“We are thrilled to have Javaris join our team at Mason Middle School. To bring someone of such a high caliber onto the team in the middle of the year is exciting. We have talked a lot about how much we can learn from each other, and we share a laser sharp focus on doing what we can to support our students’ growth,” says Lauren Gentene, MMS Principal.

Powell received his Master’s of Science degree in Educational Administration from Trinity Washington University, Master's of Arts in Communication and Culture from Howard University, and his Bachelor of Arts in Speech and Dramatic Art from Jackson State University.

“As a classroom teacher, STEM leader, and building administrator, I’ve worked for almost two decades to foster environments that encourage students to become curious learners equipped with knowledge and experience so that they can make informed decisions as positive contributors on their life and career paths. I believe this desire for ensuring all students have daily rich educational experiences is shared by the Mason City Schools community and I am looking forward to being part of the team that helps make this happen," explains Powell.

Powell and his wife, Anna, have two children-ages 3, 10 months, and a four year old rescue cat that thinks he’s a dog.  Powell enjoys watching Jeopardy and collecting vintage vinyl.
