Elementary Leadership Announcement for 18-19
Posted on 07/18/2018

Jonathan CooperDear Mason City Schools Family,

I hope you are enjoying a relaxing and rejuvenating summer.  The Cooper Family has finally unpacked all of our boxes after our move to Mason this spring, and we have loved getting to know more of you at iconic community events like Red, Rhythm & Boom, Music in Mason Friday's, last weekend’s Hero Run, and this weekend’s Racin’ in Mason. This is such a special place to live, work, and learn, and I am grateful to get to “do life” with all of you!

On July 10, Mason Intermediate School Principal Greg Sears accepted a position as Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning for the Forest Hills School District. We are sad to see him leave, but are so glad for him to have this terrific opportunity to continue to grow in his leadership journey.

As we celebrate with Mr. Sears, we are left with a significant hole to fill on our team. As an agile organization, we take time to review each open position carefully and capture the opportunity to think creatively and align our talent with our current needs. I have worked closely with our administrators to develop the following 1-Year Transition Plan to help us through our transition with the necessary support and stability.

1-Year Transition Plan

  • 5th & 6th Grade - located at Mason Intermediate
    5/6 Principal - Eric Messer
5/6 Assistant Principal - Nancy Kelley
5/6 Assistant Principal - Terry Wooten
5/6 Special Services Administrator - TBD

  • 3rd & 4th Grade - located at Western Row
3/4 Interim Principal - Vivian Alvarez
3/4 Assistant Principal - Tom Doerflein
3/4 Assistant Principal - Rob Polca
3/4 Special Services Administrator - Nicole Pfirman

  • PreK-2nd Grade -- located at the Mason Early Childhood Center
    PreK-2 Principal - Melissa Bly
PreK-2 Assistant Principal - Jen Johnson
PreK-2 Assistant Principal - Kelly Miller
    PreK-2 Assistant Principal - TBD
PreK-2 Special Services Administrator - Thea Staley

We are fortunate to have a strong team of leaders at Mason who see this as an opportunity to strengthen our teamwork and collaboration. Our leaders have designed a plan that we believe will best serve our students and staff during this one year transition window while we prepare to return to our more permanent home next year as part of our Master Facilities Plan.

As I had the privilege to work with our principals, assistant principals, central leadership, and other district leaders to design this 1-Year Transition Plan, my excitement to serve as your superintendent has grown tremendously. I say this with deep sincerity - I believe that we will engage in our best work ever as we embark on this next chapter!

With Gratitude,

Jonathan Cooper
