MHS's Acharya Named INTEL ​Finalist

Laalitya AcharyaMason High School freshman Laalitya Acharya recently represented Ohio in the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair - one of the most prestigious pre-college science competitions in the world.

Acharya is one of six students whose research projects were judged the best of Ohio during the Buckeye Science and Engineering Fair on April 7. These students joined over 1,800 high school students from more than 80 countries in Pittsburgh May 13-May 18 to compete for more than $4 million in scholarships and prizes. The all-expense paid weeklong trip was sponsored by Intel and the International Society for Science and locally was made possible because of the generosity of Ethicon, a Johnson and Johnson Company.

​Acharya's innovation focuses on using a ​multitude of sources to generate electricity with a device that provides clean energy,​ while being affordable, scalable and portable.

She was a top ten finalist for 3M Discovery Education Young Scientist Award 2017 and won the summer mentorship from 3M scientist and all-expense paid trip to 3M Headquarter in Minneapolis. Laalitya has been participating in science fairs and has won multiple awards at district and state levels. She is a part of the Mason High School Speech and Debate Team and Science Olympiad Team.

O​n May 1, Acharya sat down to discuss Her STEM-Story​ where she shared that "Why? and How? were some of her favorite words growing up. Laalitya has identified the gap that young girls are faced with when trying to take up STEM, she wants to change how the next generation approaches these courses and make a difference!​"
