Gayatri RajanMason Middle School eighth grader Gayatri Rajan won five medals at the 2018 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition.

Rajan received two gold medals and three silver medals in the poetry category.  National Medalists represent less than one percent of submissions to the 2018 Scholastic Awards.

"We are so very proud of Gayatri who has been identified by panels of creative professionals as one of the most talented young writers in the nation! Earning recognition at the national level places Gayatri among the legacy of celebrated authors and artists Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Sylvia Plath, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, and Marc Brown. Congratulations, Gayatri! MMS is proud of your accomplishments," said Rajan's language arts teacher, Laura Reed.

Students in grades 7–12 submit creative and original work in any of the Awards’ 29 art and writing categories, including architecture, painting, flash fiction, poetry, printmaking, and video game design. All works are evaluated first on a regional level by more than 100 local affiliates of the Alliance, and then nationally by an impressive panel of creative industry experts. At each level of judging, all works are reviewed based on the same criteria that have represented the program since its founding in 1923: originality, technical skill, and emergence of personal vision or voice.

"This year students submitted nearly 350,000 works of art and writing. Nearly 20,000 submissions received regional Gold Keys - the top honor at the regional level. Nearly 3,300 medals were awarded at the national level," shared Virginia McEnerney, Executive Director of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.

Students receiving top awards are invited to attend the annual National Events in New York City, with a National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall on Thursday, June 7.
