Training Day at MIStudents at Mason Intermediate are encouraged to participate in the Flying Pig's Kids' 26th Mile Event on Saturday, May 5.

On March 2, MI students on Team Infinity held their first 'training day' for the event. Watch Channel 9's coverage.

"This is our third year creating a team for the event, and it's been a lot of fun!, " shared MI fifth grade Team Infinity teacher Chelsea Wirtz. "The goal is for them to run 25 miles before the first week of May, which is Pig weekend. On Saturday, May 5th, our team will run the last mile of the kids' marathon together."

Students have a "hog log" where they are challenged to keep track of their mileage.  With their registration, the kids and other team members, including parents and siblings, get to run their last mile on the actual marathon course, and they get a t-shirt, medal, and post-race snacks.

"It gets kids really excited about running or walking, which is awesome. I stress that this is all for fun, not competitive, and it helps to create so much authentic conversation about being good sports and cheering others on, added Wirtz.

In the past, students just participated in the final mile together, but this year students are 'training' during the school day as a team. Training begins with a warm up and stretching, and a game that involves running. Rules and expectations are discussed before beginning the walk or run, and students come up with them all on their own.

"They remind one another that this is simply for fun and noncompetitive," explained Wirtz. "It created great conversation. Throughout our 20 minute walk and run, I heard students cheering one another on while celebrating all sorts of physical fitness abilities.  It was a great afternoon!"
