Academically Prepared & Prepared for Life
Our community values education and invests in its children. The Mason City School District ensures that each Comet is academically prepared and prepared for life. In Mason, count on your child being safe, seen, stretched and successful.
In Mason Schools, we learn we can only control our “response” when “events” happen. No one teaches being #abovetheline better than the incredible Scalfaro Family. When lightning struck the home of Dr. Carmen Scalfaro, MHS business teacher, and Jodi Scalfaro, Mason Elementary teacher, in June, these teachers shared, "Thru God’s Grace so many people have carried us. We are more overwhelmed by connectedness to community and magnitude of love poured into us, rather than what we’ve lost.”
Mason teachers promote connection and build Comet Culture through routines, rituals and procedures in the classroom. In Erin Smith's classroom, first graders will hand you a welcome note when you visit!
Mason Intermediate School fifth grade teacher Litty Mathai has a heart for children and their teachers. As a first generation Indian-American, she was inspired by the love of caring educators who saw her as more than a student with limited English, and she pushed back on pressure to go into STEM so that she could become a reflective, risk-taking teacher inspiring a generation of kind, knowledgeable citizens.
Doaa Jasim is the busy mom of five children - TWO sets of Comet twins and a preschooler. One of the founding Lunar Moms of Mason (a group of Muslim Moms), Doaa and the other Mason women have spear-headed several efforts to give back to the schools through the Mason Schools Foundation, hosting a CommUNITY Iftar sponsored by the MCS DEI Council, and providing resources to Mason teachers.
Comet learners are taught about the #LearningPit - and that part of the learning cycle is struggle. We believe that coaching our students is not saving them from struggle. Instead, coaching our students is giving them exactly what they need.
While teachers provide tailored supports to learners in small groups, MECC, ME and MI readers are often reading independently here, there, and everywhere! A just right spot and just right book for each learner.
Mason is committed to delivering value. That means giving our students extraordinary opportunities and aligning our resources to get the biggest bang for taxpayers' dollars. Mason continues to put the majority of our resources toward instruction, pupil support and instructional support. In FY 2021, this amounted to 73.8% of the budget.
In spring 2020, Mason voters approved a 9.96 mill phased-in operating levy to keep safety and mental wellness personnel and programming, AP course choices and STEAM classes, a continued emphasis on extracurricular choices that connect students, and to make targeted class size reductions as enrollment decreases. The levy was structured so that as the district retired debt from building Mason High School, taxes would only increase by 4.71 mills. Today, that commitment has been kept.
