Parents provide a very important service when they chaperone student
trips. They help ensure the safety of our students and preserve the
educational nature of the trip. In some cases, a background check of the
chaperone may be necessary to ensure student safety. Below are some
rules and responsibilities of chaperones.
There must be at least
one chaperone (teacher, faculty sponsor, coach or parent) riding every
bus that leaves the Mason City School District boundaries.
A
chaperone must be present before any passengers board or exit the bus.
Chaperones should supervise the loading and unloading of the bus upon
departure and arrival.
On any trip within the city of
Mason or Mason City School District boundaries, should a chaperone for
the activity not be riding the bus to or from an activity, a roster with
the names and emergency contact information needs to be provided to the
bus driver before departure.
Responsibility of student
behavior rests upon the chaperone of the trip. Only in difficult
situations should the bus driver be concerned with student control.
When the activity is in progress, students cannot be sent back to the waiting bus as a disciplinary action.
At all times, laws must be followed.
Chaperones must check bus for cleanliness and forgotten items before leaving the bus.
