The Mason Intermediate sixth grade ACT class partnered with Mason High School's store, The Comet Zone, and MHS Business teacher Dr. Carmen Scalfaro to pilot a school store at MI - The Comet Corner.
"We successfully completed our first sale of smencils - scented pencils! - with all $400 in proceeds going to the American Cancer Society in memory of Monique King," shared MI Gifted Intervention Specialists Joan Davis and Chantele Gillman. "We plan to expand this entrepreneurship and leadership opportunity next year through our partnership with The Comet Zone."
As a way to develop leadership and entrepreneurial skills in the sixth grade gifted class, D
avis and Gillman
decided to pilot a school store by selling one item during school lunch times. The students
brainstormed ideas on what to sell that would
be beneficial and appropriate for
fourth through sixth
graders at school.
"The students voted and narrowed it down to smencils because everyone can use a pencil that's already sharpened AND smells good!"
laughed Davis.
They also voted on the store name, The Comet Corner, and decided
where the proceeds would go.
They p
artnered with The Comet Zone at
MHS
who took care of placing the orders, delivering the product to
MI
, overseeing the student sales during lunch, and transporting the money back to the Comet Zone for payment.
The smencils were so popular, t
hey a
lmost sold out on the first of four planned sale dates, so The Comet Zone agreed to order more to continue the sale.
"O
ur vision for the store moving forward is to continue the relationship with The Comet Zone, expand our products being sold, and have a permanent space
and
business hours within the school,"
added Davis. "
Through this real world learning experience, we hope to build effective leaders while making a difference in our community."
