MI Students Celebrate Holidays with Honor Flight Fundraiser

Mason Intermediate sixth graders collected donations this holiday season to support sending a local veteran on an Honor Flight. The 110 Team Horizon students and their families raised $415. A  check was presented to Honor Flight Tri-State director Cheryl Popp on December 14.

This cause is near and dear to the hearts of the educators on Team Horizon. MI teachers Linda Noyes, Craig Potts and Lindsey Schlabach are all children of veterans, and Shannon Temple is the grandchild of a veteran.

“I thought of the idea at Veterans Day.  Our sixth graders were asking about ways we could do something special for our Veterans.  There are many outstanding veterans organizations, but Honor Flight Tri State directly supports our local vets,” said Noyes.

Noyes' father-in-law went on his Honor Flight before he passed away, and it impacted her family in such a positive and memorable way. Noyes thought this would be a great holiday service project for the students so she contacted Popp and let the students know about the service project right before Thanksgiving.

“What better way to give thanks than to the men and women who have protected our freedom? This was especially powerful for our team, as so many of our kids have veterans in their immediate families,” shared Noyes. “I am very proud that this holiday season our students took time to enthusiastically thank those that made this season possible for all of us. Every day they were checking the bulletin board to see how close we were to reaching our goal!”

Honor Flight Tri-State sends veterans on a one day trip to Washington DC to see their memorials in our nation’s capital, and witness the gratitude our nation has for their service and dedication to America’s freedom. It costs $450 to sponsor a local veteran’s trip of a lifetime. All Honor Flights include airfare, a bus tour, an Honor Flight signature t-shirt, a name badge souvenir, three meals, and assigned guardians on a one day trip. The public is always encouraged to meet at the CVG airport upon arrival to welcome these heroes back home.
