MHS Students Take Top Honors in State Economics Competitio
F
our Mason High School students were named the Ohio State Champs in The National Economics Challenge.

Victor Chen, Ryan Kouche, Jack Li
and Ishani Paul
won Ohio's top honors in the Adam Smith division - the national economics challenge for students in advanced placement, international baccalaureate and honors classes.

"These students were in my AP Economics class and I gave them additional materials from which they could study," shared MHS Economics and AP Economics teacher Steve Prescott. "They won by scoring the highest of any team from Ohio on the online test. It actually came down to a tie over the number correct, but they had answered a little faster and in doing so, moved on to the Semi-Finals competition."

The tests include advanced questions on macroeconomics, microeconomics, and international economics. The score is derived from the number of correct answered, and as previously mentioned, can also come down to the speed of responses.

The Semi-Finals regional competition was proctored by MHS Assistant Principal Brandon Rompies and involved individual responses as well as a group challenge where the students discussed a problem and had to answer each question online.

The National Economics Challenge (NEC) is the nation’s only high school economics competition. Each year, over 11,000 students across the U.S. participate in the competition. The Challenge recognizes exceptional high school students for their knowledge of economic principles and their ability to apply problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to real-world events.
