Derrick Earns MMS Geo Bee TitleMason Middle School eighth grader Aaron Derrick won the school level competition of the National Geographic Bee on January 18, and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. Second place winner Gabriel Paris-Ebdon and third place winner Sanjay Swamy also competed in the nationwide geography competition designed to encourage the teaching and study of geography. All of the students qualified to participate in the school-level competition by missing no more than one question on the qualifying test. “The students did a marvelously amazing job of answering National Geographic's extraordinarily difficult questions. Please help us congratulate Aaron on his wonderful accomplishment, and Good luck!” said Ricardo Grayer, MMS social studies teacher and geography bee coordinator. Derrick will now take a written test in an attempt to qualify for the state-level Bee. Schools from all 50 U.S. states, the U.S. territories, and the U.S. Department of Defense schools participate in the National Geographic Bee. Participants in the state GEO Bee will be determined based on a written test and announced in March.
