Improvement Partners: Deerfield Twp & Mason City SchoolsDirt from Deerfield Township's Mason Road Improvement Project is being donated to Mason City Schools to improve fields at the Mason Early Childhood Center.

The Mason Road closure from Butler Warren Road to Maxwell Drive/Whispering Springs Drive is a roadway improvement project that will widen the road. The project includes new construction with full-depth pavement, widening of the existing roadway and bridge, multi-use path, curb and gutter, new storm sewer, pavement markings and updated signage. The construction began in June 2017 and is scheduled to be completed November 2017.

The donation of the dirt to the district is a true partnership at work.

"We are so appreciative to our Deerfield Township partners who are giving us 5,000 cubic feet of usable top soil that will effectively drain and nurture healthy grass," said MCS Chief Operations Officer Todd Petrey. "This is top soil conducive to growing healthy sod that will create usable space for Mason students."

The fields located on the MECC property at Hickory Woods Drive and Mason Road have traditionally not been conducive for use by students. Through a contract with Rack-Ballauer Excavating, Inc. out of Cincinnati, the company will be dumping the dirt at MECC. The long-term goal is to raise the MECC fields to an appropriate level that will support usable green space for outdoor activities.

"The Township is always excited whenever we have an opportunity to partner with our local schools.   This particular roadway project will be a significant improvement for our entire region, and we are glad that the topsoil is able to be utilized to enhance the school’s fields," explained Eric Reiners, Administrator.
