Comet Skippers Celebrate 15 YearsFifteen years ago, Mike and Carmen Simpson moved with their three children, who were actively involved with jumprope, from Texas to Ohio. The Simpson's, who were coaches of the jumprope team the Hot Steppers in Grapevine, Texas, promised their children that they would start up a new team in Cincinnati upon arriving.

The family met with the Mason City Schools district in 2003, and with the backing of the District, the Comet Skippers of Mason, Ohio began.

"They brought with them a bag of maybe 25 ropes, and the kids just kept coming and coming," shared current Comet Skippers head coach Yvonne Hill. "The Simpson's quickly realized they were going to need more ropes!"

The Simpsons retired from their coaching roles in 2015, but their jumprope legacy lives on.

"We've been overwhelmed from the beginning. Blessed in Mason to have 75 jumpers, and continue to grow each year," explained Hill, who has been with the team for nine years, and head coach for five.

The Comet Skippers team is made up of boys and girls in grades second through twelfth.

“We as coaches build the framework, we organize the events and create the opportunities, but the jumpers make everything happen.

On December 1, the Comet Skippers hosted their big Jump with the Stars workshop. Jump rope staff from around the world were here in Mason, along with nearly 400 youth jumpers to learn more about the sport, make friends, and have fun.

"Jumpers tell us this is their favorite weekend of the year! We work very hard to put on a GREAT event," shared Hill.

At Jump with the Stars, there was jumping all day at Mason Intermediate, with a staff show in the late afternoon. Hill had special appreciation to recognize MCS Student Activities Director Lorri Fox Allen for being a great liaison, and to MCS Facilities Coordinator Debbie Darland and Facilities Scheduler Kim Ashman for always helping the Skippers accomplish their goals.

"As a team, the Comet Skippers deeply appreciate the years of support from Mason City Schools. We hear of teams who struggle to find safe, clean, consistent practice space and this is the foundation of what we do," explained Hill. "We do not take for granted for one minute the blessings we enjoy by being affiliated with this great school district. As a Mason mother of three and a Mason coach of hundreds over the years, I speak for all of us.... Thank you!"
